Welcome to the GreenEarth Feeds
Social media algorithms built for people who hate social media algorithms
GreenEarth is an open-source project to create better feeds — as in more interesting, more constructive, transparent and controllable. You can use our API to build your own feeds, but we’ve also carefully crafted three feeds we hope you’ll like.
All of our feeds are currently in alpha release, and we are hard at work making them better. We love feedback! Get in touch with us @greenearth.social, join our Discord, or just leave a comment below.
Your Feed
Posts from people you follow but also lots that might interest you from elsewhere, designed for nuanced, intelligent, positive conversation. Not agreement — we’re not here to filter bubble you — but constructive disagreement.
This is the main GreenEarth feed, designed as a replacement for the single algorithmic timeline you see on other platforms. It starts by finding posts from many sources, including people you follow, topics and authors you have previously liked, and popular posts. Then it combines a prediction of whether you will click “like” on each post with a constructiveness score, based on ranking with the Perspective bridging API.
Best of Friends
Never miss the good stuff from the people you follow. This feed starts with everything your friends posted within the last two weeks, and sorts it by how guessing how likely you are to click “like” on each post. The idea is to create a replacement for the default “Following” feed that ensures that you don’t have to worry about checking in at just the right time to catch your friends’ best posts of the day. This also means that you’ll seem more from people who post rarely but well.
Random
Every algorithm has an agenda, even ours. But what does the internet look like with no filter? The Random feed is just that: randomly selected posts from the entire ATProto universe over the last two weeks. Its… definitely a slice of life.
Note that your moderation settings are still applied, so by default you won’t see NSFW or extreme stuff. If you turn all those filters off, be prepared to drink directly from the firehose of humanity. You might learn something, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Transparency and Control
The most basic way to control your feed is to click “like” (the heart) on people and topics you want to see more of. That was always the classic notion of how an automatic feed should work, and our algorithm pays a lot of attention to likes.
But much more is coming! We are hard at work (mere weeks away) from giving you a much fuller set of controls: sliders to adjust Community vs. Serendipity, Amount of Politics, Freshness, Constructiveness, and more. Plus a “Why am I seeing this?” page that explains why each post was chosen for you.
The longer roadmap includes natural language control, so if you want something more specific you’ll be able to just tell the algorithm what you want.
